UV and salt water resistance films – Technical Guide

The durability of a boat foil depends greatly on its resistance to UV radiation and salt water. Find out the technical details.

1. UV resistance

What is UV radiation?

UV radiation (ultraviolet) is a form of radiation emanating from the sun. It consists of three types:

  • UVA: Long wavelength, causes fade
  • UVB: Medium wave, causes damage
  • UVC: Shortwave, filtered by the atmosphere

How do films protect against UV?

High-quality boat films have several UV protective layers:

  • UV absorber: Chemicals which absorb UV radiation
  • UV-Blocker: Pigments which reflect UV radiation
  • Stabilisatoren: Prevent oxidation and fade
  • Protective layer: Transparent layer over the film

Polyurethan (PU)Excellent<3%
Calendered VinylGut10–15%

2. Salt water resistance

What is saltwater?

Salt water contains dissolved salts (mainly sodium chloride) and is extremely corrosive. It causes oxidation, yellowing and material degradation.

How do films protect themselves from salt water?

  • Watertight adhesive layer: Prevents water penetration
  • Corrosion protection: Chemical barrier against salts
  • Surface treatment: Sealing of the edges
  • Selection of materials: Saltwater resistant plastics

3. Combined load: UV + salt water

The combination of UV radiation and salt water is particularly harmful. It causes:

  • Accelerated oxidation
  • Faster fade
  • Material embrittlement
  • Adhesive degradation

4. Maximising durability

Proper choice of materials

Use high-quality materials with proven UV and salt water resistance.

Professional application

A thorough surface preparation and professional application are crucial.

Regular care

Monthly cleaning and annual sealing significantly extend the service life.

Sun protection

For prolonged storage, use a boat cover to reduce UV exposure.
