Care instructions for boat wraps –
This is how the film lasts 10 years

6 minutes reading timeUpdated: July 2026

A high-quality boat wrapping can last 7–10 years – but only with proper care. Incorrect cleaning agents, high-pressure cleaners on edges or the application of wax can permanently damage the film. We show what really works.

Regular cleaning – the most important

Regular cleaning is the most important factor in the longevity of your boat foil. Salt, algae, bird droppings and diesel residues attack the foil if they act too long.

βœ“ Recommended

  • Water + mild soapy water (pH neutral)
  • Soft sponge or microfibre cloth
  • 3M Marine Vinyl Cleaner
  • Avery Dennison Wrap Care Reiniger
  • Isopropyl alcohol (diluted, for stains)

βœ— Verboten

  • High pressure cleaners directly on edges/seams
  • Scouring agents and abrasive pads
  • Solvent (acetone, gasoline, turpentine)
  • Wax or polish on film
  • Steam cleaners

Annual sealing

Once a year – ideally at the start of the season – the film should be treated with a film-suitable sealing agent. This protects against UV radiation, salt water and dirt.

Recommended products: 3M Marine Vinyl Cleaner & Protectant, Gtechniq C1 Crystal Lacquer (for glossy films) or Gyeon Q2 Matt (for matte films). Important: No conventional car wax – it clogs the pores of matte films and changes the gloss level.

Winter camps – what to consider

Wrapping are winter resistant and do not require special protection against frost. However, the following should be noted:

  • β†’Clean thoroughly before storage – dried dirt does more harm than frost
  • β†’Use cover sheets to avoid mechanical damage
  • β†’No foil attached directly to the foil (suction mounts can leave impressions)
  • β†’At the start of the season: inspection for bubbles, detachments or scratches
  • β†’Repair small damages immediately – they increase over the season

Frequent care mistakes

Error: High pressure cleaners on edges

Result: Water penetrates under the foil, bubble formation and detachment begin

True: High-pressure cleaners only with a large distance (> 30 cm) and low step, never directly on edges and seams

Error: Wax on matte foil

Result: Wax fills the micropores of the matte surface and permanently changes the degree of gloss

True: Use only foil-specific matt seals (e.g. B. Gyeon Q2 Matt

Error: Scratching dried bird droppings

Result: Scratches in the film that can no longer be repaired

True: Soak bird droppings with damp cloth, then swab carefully – never scratch
